Estate and Community Perimeter Security Systems: Questions You Should Ask

Whether you are securing the perimeter of your own home, or you are responsible for securing the perimeter of a large property, such as a Homeowner’s Association or Industrial complex, these are things that you should know about the Perimeter Security System that you are buying:

1) What is the system’s NAR (Nuisance Alarm Rate)?

2) Is the system environmentally protected?

3) What is the amount of capital needed to install the system?

4) What are the annual operation and maintenance costs?

5) How are alarms communicated?

6) Is the system Code Compliant?

7) How long is the system warrantied and what are the warranty conditions?

1) What is the system’s NAR (Nuisance Alarm Rate)?

A Nuisance Alarm is a false alarm. The NAR is the amount of false alarms stated as a percentage of total system alarms. So, every time that the system alarms, and there is NO intruder, that is a false alarm. Every manufacturer should be asked, and give you in writing, this important tested fact.

In a recent Engineering study at a major California airport, Heightened-Security recorded a .02% NAR rate, with 0% environmental alarms. At the same time, we had a 99.92% catch rate.

Weather and environment, including small animals around your perimeter, should not cause false alarms. Heightened-Security’s system will only alarm when a human beings is attempting to come into your property.

2) Is the system environmentally protected?

Is it UV protected? How long can the security product be expected to last in extreme weather conditions, in a harsh desert, under wet conditions or constantly being blasted by the sun? UV protection is extremely important as the product must remain working outside in every kind of weather condition. The system must retain its’ appearance and be stealthy, so that potential intruders are not even aware that it is there.

Is it water proof? This is so important due to high relative humidity from dew moisture, rain, snow and hail conditions, and protection from irrigation sprinklers found on any perimeter.

Heightened-Security uses only waterproof vulcanized rubber coated electrical switches in their installation. Then, the alarming mechanism is 100% coated in waterproof Neoprene and covered in foam, UV protected armoring material (bed liner) over the entire system, so you can’t even tell that the system is there.

3) What is the amount of capital needed to install the system?

Compare ALL the costs for procurement and installation of the system and the amount of time and assistance required to make it work. Look for a system that is easily connected to any existing cameras, alarms and your monthly monitoring. Heightened-Security products will interface with every existing camera, alarm panel, monitoring company and alarm used in the industry.

4) What are the annual operation and maintenance costs?

Look for a system that does not require expensive constant trimming or clearing of any perimeter landscaping (trees, bushes and vines) to maintain its’ functionality. Heightened-Security IDS system has no requirement for seasonal trimming of any landscaping.

Look for a system with low maintenance costs. If damaged, Heightened-Security systems can easily and inexpensively be repaired, keeping your system up and operating in all conditions.

5) How are alarms communicated?

Not only should alarms be real (see NAR), a triggering alarm system is must communicate instantaneously where and when a perimeter intrusion is occurring. Heightened-Security systems provide the necessary fiber to provide a data platform to perform this function. Where WIFI is present, our system can communicate by text to any secured phone showing the exact point of intrusion is occurring. Wireless or hard-wired, Ethernet or fiber connectivity is provided within our controller system.

6) Is the system code compliant?

A perimeter system cannot be installed unless it is compliant with a local government’s codes.. Heightened-Security’s systems are 100% code complaint and do not require a permit to be installed.

7) How long is the system warrantied and what are the warranty conditions?

With one year for all field components and three years on our controllers, Heightened-Security is the leader in warranty coverage. Inexpensive limited extended warranty packages can also be purchased.
